Bury College Mural Design Competition

Wednesday January 15, 2014

AFG LAW invited Bury College’s art students to design an entrance hall mural for their Market Street office in Bury. The winning design was created by 18 year old student Alex Burke who is from Bury and is studying for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Interactive Media.

LOCAL STUDENT WINS MURAL DESIGN COMPETITION

AFG LAW felt that the design both satisfied the brief and allowed the individuality of the student to shine through. Alex was presented with an iPad Mini as his prize for winning the competition.

Greg French, partner at AFG LAW, said, ‘We wanted to do something a little different – something which conveyed a stronger sense of community rather than a purely corporate or commercial design. The mural is the first thing visitors to our Bury office see and we have had extremely positive feedback already. We are delighted with Alex’s design.’

AFG LAW know how important it is to connect with the local community and to demonstrate that they are a local firm in every way possible. ‘We are approachable and keen to engage and support the community which we ourselves are part of. Bury College has a solid reputation and is a key part of the Bury community – we thought they’d be an ideal partner to work with on this project as we are both members of the best of bury too,’ added Greg.

John Pritchard, assistant curriculum manger, who facilitated the collaboration said, ‘Projects like this provide ‘real world’ experience to our art students and help to demonstrate how their interests and skills can be applied to commercial needs. It gives them early experience of interpreting design briefs and highlights the challenges of producing ‘art to order’ in a commercial marketplace.’

AFG LAW feel the design communicates their ‘traditional values’ and ‘modern approach’ as well as the firm’s commitment to improving its accessibility with the Bury community. This is achieved through modern social media platforms (which appear as part of the design) and also is shown in the collaborative nature of how the artwork was commissioned with Bury College.

‘We have an original piece of modern artwork and we also have the experience of a successful collaboration with an incredibly important Bury institution. We’ve shown art students how their interests translate into a commercial environment and given them a “designer / client” experience. We’re looking forward to the next opportunity,’ commented Greg.
